Our Pupils’ perspective
In Maths, we learn how to understand numbers and calculations to help us become better at mathematics and become mathematicians. We believe maths will help us in every aspect of our daily lives and lots of different jobs.
Subject Leader
Mrs Holden has been the Maths subject lead at our school for many years. Her passion for maths can be seen in all she does, whether she is working with teachers, parents or children. Mrs Holden believes that children are natural mathematicians and begin learning maths from a young age. She enjoys practical maths activities and helping children see the connections between different areas of maths. Recently, she has been working with the Education Endowment Fund to help support all children during maths lessons to ensure we meet the needs of all our learners.
Subject Intent
At St. Luke and St. Philip’s, we believe Mathematics is important in everyday life and excellence is always encouraged. It is integral to all aspects of life and with this in mind we endeavour to ensure that children develop a healthy and enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics that will stay with them and nurture those who show a talent for mathematics.
As a school, we know Mathematics helps children to make sense of the world around them through developing their ability to calculate, to reason and to solve problems. It enables children to understand and appreciate relationships and pattern in both number and space in their everyday lives. Through their growing knowledge and understanding, children learn to appreciate the contribution made by many cultures to the development and application of mathematics which supports our school vision so that diversity is embraced and respect is expected.
At St. Luke & St. Philip’s Primary School we aim to:
-
develop a positive attitude to mathematics as an interesting and attractive subject in which all children gain some success and pleasure;
-
develop mathematical understanding through systematic direct teaching of appropriate learning objectives;
-
encourage the effective use of mathematics as a tool in a wide range of activities within school and, subsequently, adult life;
-
develop an ability in the children to express themselves fluently, to talk about the subject with assurance, using correct mathematical language and vocabulary;
-
develop an appreciation of relationships within mathematics;
-
develop ability to think clearly and logically with independence of thought and flexibility of mind;
-
develop an appreciation of creative aspects of mathematics and awareness of its aesthetic appeal;
-
develop mathematical skills and knowledge and quick recall of basic facts
